ABOUT THE ARTIST
Elisabeth Staton, A.O.C.A, BA
I started drawing and painting at Saturday morning Art classes to which my Mom took me. She had studied Commercial Art in high school and wanted to pass on her interest. I began an engineering program after high school but ended up at the Ontario College of Art in Graphic Design. After a lengthy career in special event management, I decided to explore two new kinds of art.
Found Objects
Objects that I use are sometimes homely, everyday items from the late 1850’s to the 1960’s. These objects are intrinsically beautiful in part because of the materials they are made of. They have an aesthetic that seems more personal than the plastic objects all around us, even though a substantial number were factory made. Other objects are industrial and utilitarian, yet their makers made a concerted effort to decorate them. I especially like objects from Ontario and Northern New York, because they are from places close to us. I hope the artwork tells you a story or evokes a memory from the past.
Pastel Drawing
I’ve been inspired by the pastel work of Edgar Degas and Mary Cassat. Although both were prodigious portrait painters, I still find their techniques valuable in the landscape genre that I’ve been working in so far. I hope to explore pastels combined with other media while continuing to draw the local landscape.
